L Drill

The 505 Agility test evaluates an individual's ability to make rapid 180-degree turns. This versatile test can be adapted for sport-specific evaluation, such as incorporating a cricket bat into the assessment.

Drill Instructions

The L-Drill (3-Cone) is a test of speed, quickness, flexibility, body control, and ability to change direction. This drill uses a stationary start and requires 1 timing gate. An additional gate can be added if a hand start is desired.

Step-By-Step Instructions

  • Install batteries in each laser you plan to use.
  • Install/open the Dashr app on your phone or tablet. (Create an account here if you have not already)
  • Register each laser in the app – Navigate to the “Device Registration” button at the bottom, power on the lasers one at a time and select them from the “Available” list and assign them a number. Write that number on your laser. (This only has to be done the first time you use the laser with this phone/tablet)
  • Return to the home menu and select L-Drill.
  • Screw the laser onto a taller tripods, positioned so that the beam is around hip height.
  • Screw a reflector onto a matching tripod and position laser and reflectors across from each other (~6 ft) to create a line to pass through. Instructions here.
  • If you wish to time off the hand vs the body (this is ideal), you can set up an additional gate on a set of mini tripods for the athlete’s hand – when the hand moves the clock starts (optional).
  • With the laser(s) on, select the appropriate laser(s) from the drop-down menu and press the “Connect” button. If it does not work the first time, repeat.
  • Once all devices are connected, press the “Start Testing” button.
  • Check in the appropriate athlete (details here) – optional.
  • With QuickRun on, get set while in the gate, after 3 sec of blocking the laser you will get a “Go!” message. Leave the laser when you want (time will turn blue – indicating that timing is taking place), and you get a result when you cross the gate again.
  • With QuickRun off (option in settings) you will see “Set” and “Reset” buttons to give you control of when a test starts. Press “Set” once the athlete is ready to take off – then you will get the “Go!” message. Press “Reset” to clear the time for the next athlete.

Note that the laser locks out for several seconds after timing begins in this drill. This is so that if the athlete enters the laser on their first time back to the starting line, the time is not recorded.
